This study aims to objectively measure the data literacy of university freshmen to examine their proficiency levels. By providing foundational data, it seeks to facilitate systematic curriculum development for enhancing awareness of data literacy and to draw meaningful implications. The subjects of this study were 514 freshmen who enrolled in 2023 at the university where the researcher is employed. Summarizing the main findings: First, factor analysis resulted in the extraction of three components. Second, the overall average scores were 3.29 for data analysis competency, 3.57 for data ethics and social impact, and 3.63 for data collection and utilization, with significant differences observed based on gender and academic division. From the implications drawn for cultivating data literacy: First, considering the assessed levels of data literacy among university freshmen, there is a need for data literacy education. Given the significant variances by gender and academic division, data literacy courses should be included in the basic liberal arts curriculum to ensure that all freshmen, regardless of their field, have opportunities to learn data literacy. Second, fostering data literacy requires an integrated approach that combines competencies such as critical thinking, the use of data-related technologies and tools, and communication skills. Third, for freshmen in fields less associated with numbers—such as humanities, social sciences, arts, and physical education—providing examples closely related to their interests and majors in digital literacy education can help them recognize its relevance to their fields, thereby promoting interest and motivation in related courses. |
