논문내용 This paper presents an immersive training system which helps users to learn shielded metal arc weld in virtual environment. This proposed shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) equipment training system simulates ‘arc’ between base metal and a target object using virtual reality technology and guides users to weld. It can be a self-directed and immersive virtual training or learning which can solve the problems and drawbacks during real welding. The proposed system consists of a head mounted display (HMD), an arc welding electrode holder, a VR base station, and a VR content. The developed training system allows users to weld target plates together in safe learning environment. Immersive visual feedback and interactivity in the proposed system enhances the self-directed learning experience of users. Evaluation tests were conducted to investigate not only the degree of users’ satisfaction of the proposed system but also its usability. As a result, the ‘satisfaction' of the proposed system was relatively high at 4.22 (likert scale 5), and the 'usability' survey also received a high score. In addition, users also presented various opinions, such as an educational environment similar to the actual practice environment, a point that is useful for beginners because it is safe and has no risk factors, and that it is easy to analyze the result data so that it can be used as evaluation data when teaching students. The result shows the possibility of VR training system as an immersive educational media.
