The smartphone usage of students has increased for leisure purposes other than learning, and over-dependence has also become a serious issue since the spread of COVID-19. This paper puts an in-depth study on the usage of smartphones by college students and four-year university students and presents actual conditions and problems caused, and tries to present solutions. For this purpose, 490 students(217 college students and 273 four-year university students) were asked to answer questionnaires, and the results are as follows. Firstly, 70.2% of college students and 68.0% of four-year university students answered that they use smartphones for leisure and communication purposes in their daily life. Secondly, 23.1% of college students and 14.7% of four-year university students showed over-dependence on smartphones. Thirdly, 32.4% of college students and 35.3% of four-year university students have increased movies/TV/video viewing after COVID-19. The content they tried for the first time was private education with 47.5% of college students and the required education with 34.7% of four-year university students. Fourthly, digital competence was 3.15 points for college students and 3.17 points for four-year university students. Lastly, 34.4% of college students and 30.3% of four-year university students answered that they would attend programs for desirable usage of smartphones in the future. To help students who are over-independent to smartphones, the role of counseling institutions in universities is vital as the primary agent of developing and operating desirable smartphone-using programs. |
