With the improvement in the standard of living, cosmetic products became one of the essential daily needs for everyone regardless of their age and gender. Also, the concurrent COVID19 pandemic situation and the growing numbers of the aging population contribute to the recent explosion of demand for hair dye products. As the products become more widely used both in diversity and volume, their safety management should be further fortified. In this study, the current safety issues of the use of 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene(THB) would be addressed. Currently, a total of eight hair coloring shampoos using polyphenolic natural hair darkening mechanisms are on the market, and all of those products are containing with 1,2,4-THB, which is amid ongoing controversy. In addition to that, sample examination for detecting other risky ingredients such as p-phenylenediamine(PPD), toluene-2,5-diamine sulfate(TDS), m-aminophenol(MAP), and three heavy metals was investigated under the purpose of safety management. Toxic ingredients of PPD, TDS, and MAP were undetected or minimally detected from one sample out of nine in total. However, nickel was found in all nine samples exceeding 1.8-fold in the maximal case. Other than that, all samples exceeded the total aerobic microbial count up to 11,000 times over the regulatory safety standard. In order to improve those findings from the sample testing, the regulatory body imposed a ban or corrective order on the manufacturing and sales of the products. Based on these findings, the necessity for strict safety monitoring as well as the safety management system was suggested. |
