This paper aims to propose a systematic approach for operational design of production systems where operators handle two types of tasks, indoor and outdoor tasks. Assume that a single operator use a single internal resource such as machine or workbench in processing indoor tasks. In contrast, operator must leave from production system to process outdoor tasks. If workload of outdoor tasks is considerable, the optimal number of internal resources might be smaller than the number of given operators. The proposed approach can be used to determine the optimal number of internal resources and operation policies affecting the performance measures. The approach is based on two analysis techniques, simulation and Design of Experiment (DoE). Simulation is used to build simulation model of a production system with both indoor and outdoor tasks, and evaluate performance measures by performing simulation experiments. Simulation is a powerful tool for analysis on performance measure of complex systems. However, if the performance measure is affected by many parameters, the number of experiment cases increases exponentially. DoE technique enables to focus on some cases worth investigating. Thus, integration of simulation and DoE helps to find the optimal operational design more quickly. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach can be used to find the optimal number of internal resources and operation policy for production system with both indoor and outdoor tasks. |
