The purpose of this study is to explore whether there are differences in smartphone usage time and overdependence by personal characteristics and smartphone use type. The results of the study are as follows. First, the main purposes of smartphone use were categorized into four types: communication type, game type, YouTube type, and combined type. The purpose for which upper elementary school students used smartphones the most was YouTube type. However, male students tending to be more game type and combined type, and female students more likely to be YouTube type and communication type. Additionally, 4th graders had a lot of game types, 5th graders had a lot of YouTube types similar to game types, and 6th graders had significantly less game types and more YouTube types. Second, elementary school students' smartphone usage time ranged from more than 2 hours to less than 3 hours on average per day, with more female students than male students and increasing as the grade increased. Also, the YouTube type and combined type spent more time on daily smartphone use than the communication type and game type. Third, smartphone overdependence was found to be higher among female students than male students and increased with increasing grade. While the YouTube type had a higher smartphones overdependence than the communication type. Based on the research results, it was suggested that customized smartphone use education should be provided according to gender and grade. |
