The purposes of this study are to analyze the structural relationship between changes in amount and qualitative of Internet use and Internet use outcomes of the elderly (55+) during COVID-19 pandemic and to discuss the implications. We used the raw data that the ‘2020 Survey on the Digital Divide’ conducted by the National Information Society Agency. The results indicated that the amount of Internet use among the elderly increased, and the diversity of Internet use and online participation activities also increased during COVID-19. The results showed that changes in amount of Internet use of the elderly had positive effect on the changes in Internet use diversities and changes in online participation activities, the changes in Internet use diversities and online participation activities as a qualitative usage had positive effect on the Internet use benefits. It is, however, found that changes in amount of Internet use had negative effect on the benefits of Internet use. In addition, the changes in Internet use diversity and online participation activities as a qualitative usage mediated the positive relationship between changes in amount of Internet use and Internet use benefits. Based on these results, this study discussed theoretical and policy implications for bridging the digital divide and improving the Internet use benefits of the elderly. |
