The objective of this study was to investigate the mediating roles of self-esteem and social isolation in the relationship between digital media capacity and quality of life of the Korean elderly. Data of a media panel survey which was conducted by Korea Information Society Development Institute in 2021 was used. Specifically, structural equation modeling(SEM) was used to analyze data of 3,211 people aged 60 or older in the panel survey. The main findings of the study showed that digital media capacity, social isolation, and self-esteem had a direct effect on life satisfaction of the Korean elderly, and social isolation and self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between digital media capacity and life satisfaction. in summary, higher levels of capacity and self-esteem were associated with lower levels of social isolation and higher levels of life satisfation among Korean elderly individuals. Based on the study results, it was discussed to improve the quality of life in the later life by promoting digital media competence. In the future, a follow-up study should be conducted to suggest ways to bridge the gap in Digital Media Capacity use by conducting comprehensive studies to identify various variables and relationships related to the quality of life of the elderly. |
