Plank exercise is a training method that increases the stability of the core muscles and is commonly used in rehabilitation areas. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the plank exercise using suspension (PS) on muscle activation and exertion level in healthy participants. Twenty-four healthy adults participated in present study. The maximum voluntary isometric contraction was performed and surface electromyography was carried out for two plank exercises: the general plank (GP) and the PS. Activities of the rectus abdominis (RA), the erector spinae (ES), the rectus femoris (RF), and the gluteus maximus (GM) muscles of right and left side (total eight muscles) were investigated. The visual analog scale (VAS) was used to compare exertion levels for the two exercises. The activation of the RA and the GM was significantly greater in the PS than the GP (p < .05). The RF activation was significantly greater in GP than PS (p < .05). There was no significant difference in ES activation between the two exercises. The exertion levels also showed no significant difference for two exercises. The findings of this study demonstrated that the PS can activate more the RA and the GM without increase of exertion level than the GP. |
