논문내용 In recent years, the unprecedented success of information technology leads a tremendous growth in demand for the Internet access in the 21st century. Closely akin to the atomic potential acting on electrons as one special related research, since a photonic crystal possesses a forbidden frequency band, called a photonic band-gap, in which propagation of electromagnetic waves is prohibited, the light-reflection principle in the photonic crystal structure medium can produce many of the analogous optical phenomena. Thereby, electromagnetic waves are effectively controlled either to propagate through the light-wave communication medium or not, depending on operating wavelengths. In this research, a hollow air-core photonic crystal waveguide (HAPCW) for the effective mode area enlargement of electromagnetic characteristics has been first designed and explored by including a central air hole. The HAPCW design structure showing superior results provides effective areas of 198.76 μm2  and 200.24 μ m2  at the operating wavelengths of 1.3 μm and 1.55 μm, respectively, for the fundamental mode, which are enlarged by 44.16 μm2  and 44.38 μm2 , compared with the regular cylindrical photonic crystal waveguide. Findings in this investigation are expected to be capable of providing materials for communication performance improvement in the light information transmission by reducing serious signal distortion, due to the effective mode area enlargement.
